On Icons

Icons are done on specially processed linden wood on which the preparation is spread. They are painted with the technique of egg tempera. Wax polish is used to protect them, and the background is coated with sandolin. They are gilded with 23-carat gold-foil. They are painted in Byzantine style and by strict church canons, which means the colors and stokes have a theological background and sense.

An icon is not an ordinary painting that is supposed to bring out emotions or reverie in us. The icon is an imagery of Christ, Holy Mother or God's saints, that are supposed to remind us of the temporality of earthly life and how to live it in a Christian way so to win the other, eternal life and the Lord's blessing. The icon reminds us of how the saint pictured on it lived knowing what the right values are and what undying glory is gained resisting temptations and obstacles.
